Oiso Books proudly presents a new occasional series of pamphlets dedicated to exciting artists/poets working in vispo – visual poetry, or the crossover zone between poetry and art:

PIKTOGRAM

The concept

Piktogram is an English-Japanese bilingual publication. Each issue of Piktogram will feature the work of just one artist. It will have twenty-four pages, of which twenty will present works by the featured artist, one on each page. The other four pages will introduce the artist and critique their work in English and Japanese. Piktogram will feature artists from anywhere in the world, but will endeavor to showcase Japanese artists when possible.

The Japanese writing system has over two thousand characters, many of which are themselves pictograms or tiny works of symbolic art, allowing for infinite possibilities. But vispo (visual poetry) is a little-known genre in Japan, and Piktogram will seek to cross-fertilize the rapidly reviving world of alphabetic art with its younger but equally exciting counterpart in Japan.

  Each issue will be printed in a limited and numbered edition of forty, and will be priced at two thousand yen [Japan], ten pounds [UK] and twenty dollars [Rest of World], including postage. It will also be available in a digital version, free of charge to read and download online at the Oiso Books home page.

  Piktogram will also serve as a catalogue. At the back of each issue will be a price list. Readers who particularly like any of the works will have the chance to purchase an original piece at a price we view as fair to both the artist and the buyer. In this way Piktogram will seek to support the careers of artists whose work deserves a wider audience.

Editor and Publisher: Tom Gill

Tom Gill is a professor of International Studies at Meiji Gakuin University, Yokohama, Japan and himself an amateur creator of Vispo. He collaborated with Barrie Tullett to produce RUHUMAN (“Are you human”), the acclaimed collection of typewriter art by the late, great Keith Armstrong（Caseroom Books, 2022）.

コンセプト

「ピクトグラム」は各号一人だけのアーティストを紹介する日英二ヶ国語パンフレットです。24ページのうち20ページで、その号のアーティストの作品を高画質で表示します。残りの4ページは、英語と日本語でアーティストの紹介と作品批評を行います。国際的な雑誌ですが、可能な限り日本人アーティストの作品を紹介します。日本語の文字には2,000以上の文字があり、無限の可能性を秘めています。「ピクトグラム」は、海外で急速に人気になりつつある文字・アートの世界と、日本の同ジャンルと合わせて新しい発見を目指します。

  各号は通し番号入り限定60部で価格は送料込みで2,000円（日本）、10ポンド（英国）、25ドル（その他の国）とします。また、デジタル版も用意され、大磯ブックスのホームページから無料で閲覧・ダウンロードできるようにします。

「ピクトグラム」はカタログの役割も果たします。各号の巻末に価格表を掲載します。作品を特に気に入った読者には、オリジナル作品を購入するチャンスがあります。このようにして、「ピクトグラム」は、有望なアーティストのキャリアを支援していきます。

トム・ギルは明治学院大学国際学部教授で、アマチュアーヴィスポ作成者。故キース・アームストロングによるタイプライター・アート作品集『RUHUMAN』（Are you human）（Caseroom Books、2021）はバリー・タレットと一緒に共同編集した。
